CHARLOTTE – How do you know if you’re paying your employees enough? Deborah Millhouse, president of CEO Inc. (www.ceohr.com), which specializes in direct hire placement, temporary staffing and human capital solutions reveals some clues in a recent article titled “5 Signs of a Bad Compensation and Benefits Plan” by Laura Mohammad for HRTools.com.
Millhouse advises employers to look at their interviews to acceptances ratio. If you’re interviewing many qualified candidates but few of them are accepting offers, it may be a sign that there is a problem with your compensation plan. “Your numbers will give you a feel for where in the employment process your plan is weak or breaking down,” says Millhouse in the article.
She goes on to say that when employees start to openly discuss pay and benefits, their dissatisfaction may stem from a poor compensation plan. “The reasons for their dissatisfaction can range widely, including feeling that they aren’t paid enough, or they aren’t paid fairly compared with other employees, or there are errors in their paychecks, or any number of other reasons,” she is quoted as saying.
Compensation issues may be behind low employee morale, lack of motivation and drama in the workplace, according to Millhouse. “When employees don’t feel that they are being compensated commensurate with the value they bring to the organization, they are not motivated to expend a tremendous amount of effort on the behalf of that organization,” Millhouse explains in the article.
