CHARLOTTE – Who hasn’t made a dumb mistake at work at some point in their career? Although no one wants to make a dumb mistake, human resources professionals agree that what really matters is how you move past it and avoid repeating it.
Deborah Millhouse, president of CEO Inc. In Jackson’s article titled “Five Dumb Mistakes Everyone Makes at Work – And How to Deal” on Glassdoor.com, Millhouse shares that one of the most common mistakes she sees involves lack of professionalism including “wearing inappropriate attire that is too tight or not clean.”
“Dress for the position that you want up the food chain,” Millhouse advises in the article.
The article also mentions unprofessional behaviors such as showing up late for meetings and poor proofing on important documents, which are some other avoidable dumb mistakes that Millhouse sees frequently in various work environments.
“The great Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi advocated that you should show up for every important business meeting 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled meeting time. Dubbed ‘Lombardi Time’, the idea is to ensure that you are on time, and that you have an opportunity to collect your thoughts before the meeting,” says Millhouse. “As for poor proofing of important documents, always have two sets of eyes check documents before they go out.”
